As you all ready know working in the laboratory can be a very exciting experience.
But a laboratory can also be a very dangerous place if safety rules are not followed at all times.
We need to make sure we read and understand the safety rules of the lab. Remember accidents
happen because of carelessness and haste, take your time to read and follow directions.
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS DRESS CODE FIRST AID
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
As you walk into the lab, be prepared to work.
Read the lab procedures with your group members before you begin the experiment.Make sure you understand the procedures.
If you do not understand a section ask your instructor.
Never handle any equipment with out the permission of your instructor, also
do not modify or change lab procedures unless instructed to do so.
Work area and equipment should always be kept clean and tidy. Only written lab procedures should be brought to the work area.
Wear proper safety equipment, goggles, lab aprons and gloves when required.
NO HORSEPLAY IS ALLOWED!
Never pour chemicals back in stock bottles, use labeled waste disposal bottles.
Never pour chemicals down the drain.
You should be able to recognize all laboratory safety symbols.
Wash hands with soap after working with specimens and chemicals.
Wash and dry the equipment used in the experiment.
No chemicals, specimens or equipment may be taken from the laboratory to any other classroom or home.
Never taste or smell any chemical no matter how pretty it looks.
No food or beverages are allowed in the laboratory.
Do not clean any chemical spills, contact your instructor for further details.
DRESS CODE
Never wear open toes shoes to the lab. You don't want to lose a couple of toes if there is a chemical spill.
Long hair must be tied back when working in the lab. The smell of burnt hair is quite unplesant.
No lose clothing, jewlery is allowed, it can hang down and touch chemicals and flames.
Remember metals are good heat conductors.
Never walk barefoot or in stockings around the lab.

FIRST AID
Report all accidents, no matter how insignificant to your instructor immediately.
Make sure you know the location of the fist-aid kit.
Know the location of the fire extinguisher and the locations of the fire exits.
Know where and how to report an accident.
Report any fires to your instructor.
Eye safety, incase of any chemicals getting into your eyes go to the eyewash station and rinse eyes for 15 minutes until professional help arrives.
